Leonid's photographic journey began when he received a camera for his 14th birthday. Many of his photographs have become treasured historical records. These include photographs of surf life saving and other historical photos in South Australia. Among the most interesting is the 1956 photograph of Victoria Square, Adelaide. This historic square has been transformed beyond recognition after several reconstructions over the years. Leonid obtained permission to climb the highest 5AD radio tower that overlooked the square in 1956. With his treasured Rectaflex camera and Zeiss Triota 135 mm Lens he captured a once in a lifetime moment! How amazing is that!!
Another picture of great interest is the lovely image of Patawalonga Estuary, Glenelg, 1952. Leonid was 17 years of age and borrowed his sister's new bicycle to ride to the old wooden bridge spanning the Patawalonga. This was the first time that he used the Rectaflex camera with 50mm Schneider Lens. What a glorious image - so peaceful, typical of the times in Adelaide and a moment in history recorded forever. The area is the home of great high rise units and restaurants now. The buildings forcing the sea back and the little estuary is no more. It remains as a beautiful picture captured by a young photographer who saw it and captured it for you!
